The cultural triangle contains the World Heritage cultural site of the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, the famous Sigiriya rock fortress, Aukana Buddha, and the rock temple caves at Dambulla.
Note: During our time here we may try to limit sightseeing activities to the cooler times whenever possible and therefore the exact sequence of visits will be determined by our guide depending on traffic patterns, local events, weather and the interest of the guest.

In the afternoon enjoy the climb to the marvelous rock fortress of Sigiriya is a rare jewel among the many treasures in Sri Lanka. The site was the domain of King Kashyapa whose aim was to build an impregnable fortress and within it, a heavenly abode. Rising over the dry plains of the Dambulla district, the tough climb up this flat-topped monadnock ends with the most scenic bird’s-eye view of the emerald plains and leafy villages below. The skeletal layout of the ancient city within the fortress marvels its observers with the grandeur and complexity of 5th century urban planning of Sri Lanka.
On the way to the top one can observe the famous Sigiriya frescoes of the buxom, wasp-waisted maidens bearing flowers, amidst the wilderness and ancient ruins. The smoothly glazed ‘Mirror Wall’ located a few steps away has sealed the expressions of ancient visitors, inspired by the vibrant frescoes.
Or
Climb the breathtaking Pidurangala Rock, Located in close proximity to the wondrous Sigiriya rock fortress, Pindurangala was once a royal temple that sheltered some 500 monks, operating under the patronage of medieval King Kashyapa – the ruler of Sigiriya. According to legend, Pindurangala had come into being after the Sigiriya monastery complex was shifted and hence its name – which literally translates into the ‘rock offered by the King’.
Surrounded by a brick rampart, all that remains of this once thriving monastery today are the meditation chambers constructed within a large cave and a 48-ft. reclining Buddha statue constructed of bricks, clay and lime as well as one of Asia’s oldest stupas (a mound-like structure that holds Buddhist relics). Once the ruins are observed, the visitors can climb to the top of the rock that opens out into a fantastic view of the dry-zone forestry surrounding Sigiriya.

Have an early start heading towards Wilpattu, compared to parks in the south of the country Wilpattu receives relatively few visitors.
Arrive in Wilpattu enjoy the safari at the park. Wilpattu is the oldest and second-largest wildlife sanctuary in Sri Lanka: from the western coastline north of Puttalam, it extends halfway to Anuradhapura.
Thick with dense jungle, except for hundreds of ponds or willu that give it its name, Wilpattu is famous for bears, elephants, and leopards (of which it has one of the largest populations in Sri Lanka), bird life, and many other species. It is best to visit during the inter-monsoonal months of February and October, but it is fascinating all year round.
This morning the game drive starts at the crack of dawn so you will see the abundance of wildlife at sunrise.
Make sure to have your cameras fully charged so you don’t miss out on capturing some amazing photography of the wildlife, and if you’re lucky even witness the rare leopards that have made the park their home.
- Time of departure: best time to go is 5a.m. for morning safaris
- Duration: 5 Hours, over 1 hour to get to and from any one of these parks and then 2 hours in a 4×4 vehicle with nature guide for the safari in the parks
What is included: water bottles, entrance fees to the park, 4×4 jeep, and nature guide for the safari, a picnic basket brunch, fresh juice, and cool towels on your return
Tip: Tonight dine under the stars, Ulagalla offers an exclusive dining experience to its guests who desire privacy. Imagine a table set for two in a middle of a peaceful “kamatha” – the threshing ground of a paddy field – USD 40 per person

Today we leave the Cultural Triangle and head south toward the city of Kandy.
On our drive southward, as we near the town of Dambulla, we will visit Dambulla Rock Cave Temple.
Located in the Matale district, Dambulla is a part of the cultural triangle and is home to the largest and well-preserved rock cave temple complex that lies atop a massive hill on the edge of the town. The Dambulla Cave temples complex is one of the eight UNESCO world heritage sites in the country and is renowned for its unique mural paintings and sculptures. This site will particularly interest historical art buffs, as five of the caves display ancient sculptures and paintings depicting the life of Lord Buddha.
To someone with average fitness, the climb will take approximately 30 minutes and can be done at a leisurely pace. Given the tropical climate of the country, the site is best visited either during the early morning or late afternoon hours to avoid the mid-day heat. You will be accompanied through the entire 200 step climb. It is important to note that when entering inner chambers, one should be barefoot (would suggest wearing white socks) and needs to be modestly dressed in clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
We then continue our drive southward. W15 Hanthana Estate is a restored tea bungalow poised high in the hills of the Hanthana Mountain Range. It is a peaceful escape, combining grand architecture with spectacular views, and is within easy reach of the main tourist attractions of Sri Lanka’s last royal capital. The esplanade of columns that greet you on arrival, almost Grecian in concept, signal that this is no modest tea bungalow.

There is much to do here, from challenging hikes and jeep tours of the mountains to birdwatching and playing croquet on the lawn, or you may prefer to relax in the sumptuously decorated sitting room, on the wrap-around veranda, or by the large swimming pool. W15 Hanthana Estate is just a 30-minute drive south of Kandy but feels as if it is in the middle of nowhere, offering a wonderfully tranquil stay surrounded by the picturesque scenery of the Hanthana Mountain Range
Your stay at W15 Hanthana includes below activities and must be booked at the time of reservation.
All trips include refreshments.
- Hikes - Offer 4 trails ranging from 2 to 4 hours and we are developing another longer one. You have the option to take in the sunrise, sunset or journey during the day

Today we drive to a National Park and stay for the next two nights. National parks are very popular now in Sri Lanka, and sadly the ones which are easily accessible are totally overcrowded. For this reason, we strongly suggest staying in more remote lodges, which are stunning and where the family can experience what we call a true Wildlife experience. Gal Oya in our opinion is one of these hidden gems not to be missed out on.
Spend the afternoon at leisure.
Optional: Gal Oya National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s undiscovered natural treasures. We offer a jeep ride into the forgotten Nilgala section of the park, once the protectorate of ancient royalty for the abundant medicinal plants and endemic birdlife unique to this ecosystem. Although shy and sometimes hard to spot, the park hosts most of the animals found on the island, some of the more likely species to look out for include herds of elephants, four species of deer as well as many bird species. Our more intrepid guests may also opt for the hike to the makara river mouth with one of our expert naturalists, to further experience the jungle and for the chance of seeing wildlife on foot.

Today enjoy the scenic drive heading towards Demodara. The point where the journey transforms into an uphill climb is thrilling! The air turns cool and the backdrops carpeted with lush tea estates and stunning cascades are breath-taking
Arrive and check in at Nine Skies. Just a few minutes along the tea lined estate roads from Demodera Railway Station near Ella, stands Nine Skies, a majestic former tea planter’s bungalow turned five-bedroom luxury hotel. Set within several acres of private gardens are the hotel’s croquet lawn, garden pool and sun deck, with wonderful views across the valley to the tea factory and famous Demodera loop. The bungalow’s name is a nod to the nine-arch viaduct, through which it is possible to see ‘Nine Skies’ when looking up through the arches.
Optional: Take part in the ongoing project to record and monitor the lodge’s resident species of animals. In order to understand them better and take necessary steps to conserve these animals, our team of naturalists regularly embark on evening walks around the lodge to set up camera traps. If you wish to partake in our monitoring project or want to learn more about the animals you are welcome to join our naturalists on their evening walk as they do this.

Today enjoy the tea experience at Demodara. Our resident Tea Planter passionately delves into all aspects of tea in just the right amount of detail – from a look back to the early days of “planting” and the lifestyles of the early colonial settlers, to the manufacturing process, to how flavors are created to suit various palates – he’s got it covered.
What went into creating the perfect cup of refreshing Ceylon tea in 1867 were equal parts science, art, sleight of hand, and a spot of luck. And not much has changed since! As some of the methodology and machinery are over a century old, we strongly believe that Ceylon Tea itself is part of the world’s living heritage. And this is your invitation to partake in it.
- Duration: 1.5 hours
- Time: Peak Season: (Dec-Mar): 09.30am & 11.30am
- Availability: Year round
- Note: The tea factory can be noisy & dusty at times.
On Sundays’ and Public Holidays there is usually no manufacture going on at the factory - however the tour will take place
