Mirissa, located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, is renowned as one of the best places in the world to see whales, particularly blue whales and sperm whales. The whale watching experience begins early in the morning, as the waters off the coast of Mirissa are calmer and more conducive to spotting these majestic creatures during the early hours.
The best time for whale watching in Mirissa is typically from November to April, as the seas are calmer during this period, and the chances of spotting whales are significantly higher. These months coincide with the migration patterns of the whales, particularly blue whales, which come close to Sri Lanka’s southern coast to feed on the rich plankton and krill found in the waters. While sightings are never guaranteed, the likelihood of encountering these magnificent creatures is high during the peak season.
Whale watching in Mirissa is an eco-tourism activity, and many operators adhere to responsible guidelines to ensure the safety and preservation of marine life. Boats maintain a respectful distance from the whales, ensuring that the creatures are not disturbed while still providing guests with a close and memorable experience
After the exhilarating and awe-inspiring experience of whale watching, you can spend the rest of the day at your leisure.
